5 Outdoor Adventures to Tackle in Ireland this Weekend!

Posted by Diarmuid McSweeney on

We’ve just launched our Make Life Richer Map here at Gym+Coffee and what better way to celebrate than with some outdoor activities to add a bit of adventure to your weekend?

We’ve selected 5 of the best adventures from across the country for you and if these don’t quench your thirst, check out even more on the MLR Map itself!

1.Mountain Biking on the Rostrevor Trails

Take a trip to County Down for a downhill thrill on the Rostrevor Mountain Bike Trails. The trails run alongside Carlingford Lough and dip & turn through the Rostrevor Forest. With four main trails to suit newbies through to experienced adrenaline seekers, there’s no excuse not to get on your bike this weekend! There’s on-site bike hire and if you’re not so keen on the uphill part, there’s even a service that will give you a lift up to the top!

2. Stargazing in Kerry

Looking for an outdoor activity but one that won’t leave you with aching muscles tomorrow? Look no further than the Kerry International Dark Sky Reserve! This is Ireland’s first Dark Sky Reserve and one of only three in the world with a gold-tier designation. The 700km-square area is so low on light pollution that on a clear night you can see the Milky Way and thousands (millions?!) of stars without the need for a telescope. There are lots of accommodation options in the area and plenty of excellent spots to get your astro-tourism game on!

3. Get Cycling in North Clare

The North Clare Cycle Network covers all abilities and fitness levels with four different cycling routes. Get a gentle introduction with the 18km option (around 1.5 hours of cycling) or dive head first into a massive 47km loop! All routes very conveniently have their trailheads in Doolin Village and there are some spectacular views of the Burren to be had here. Tack on a ride to Corkscrew Hill if you’re looking to add some hairpin turns to your route!

4. Traverse the Bluestack Mountains in Donegal

With 65km of trail, the Bluestack Mountain hikes can be broken off into whatever size chunks suit your ability or determination for the day! There’s so much walking to be done here that if you fancied it, you can take in the full 3-day hike and stay overnight at any of the accommodations dotted in the small towns along the way. If walking isn’t your thing but you still want to see the sights, there’s a minibus tour you can do that takes around 2.5 hours. You'll take in some of the most beautiful scenery Ireland has to offer and the photo opportunities here are insane.

5. Kayaking and River Cruising on The Shannon

If you’re looking for variety, the Shannon Blueway network of trails, rivers and tributaries has got everything you could possibly want. Hire a canoe, kayak or stand-up paddleboard and paddle the Shannon to your heart’s content, or get a little bit of speed going in a day cruiser boat. Walk the 14km Battlebridge Lock to Acres Lake trail, or jump on a bike and take in the 4.5km Ballinamore Looped Cycling trail. There’s plenty of wildlife to see here and it’s a great day (or weekend!) out for the family.
