TIPS FOR SETTING + REACHING YOUR GOALS

Posted by Peter Catchpole on

With every fresh start comes new opportunities. Sometimes in life, we’re just waiting for that sign or reason, for example to ‘Start running more often’ or to ‘Dedicate more time to meditation’. Whatever it is that you’re looking to achieve, there are definitely some tricks and actions that can make that journey easier, more purposeful and ultimately, more successful! We’ve pulled together some tips on setting your goals and how to stay on track along the way.

WRITE IT DOWN

If you can see it, you can believe it. Showing the intent to sit down and write out what you’re aiming for is THE biggest step in this journey. Having it physically visible adds motivation, direction and accountability. It also acts as a location that you can come back to and regain some focus if you start to lose track. You’re practically halfway there if you put pen to paper (or marker to giant whiteboard)!!

ADD SOME CUES

If your goal is to run a 5km race in your fastest every time, it’s very easy to say things like ‘I’m going to run more’. But it’s a little bit vague and kinda leaves you off the hook a little bit for those days when you need an extra push. By adding some specifics or cues to your plan, it certainly increases accountability and you’re more likely to stick to it. ‘I’m going to run 5km every Wednesday morning at 7am before work’ gives you structure and time specifics. Let’s not get to the stage where it’s planned out like your work calendar but being organised isn’t uncool, we promise!!

ASK FOR HELP

Yes, your goal may be individual to you but your journey to achieving it doesn’t have to be. If you’re unsure about a certain step on the ladder, spend the time to reach out to an expert, a friend or a family member to chip in if you need a helping hand.. If you happen to know someone who has achieved something similar in the past, ask them how it went. What obstacles to look out for. And what moments had the greatest impact. It can also make things more fun along the way to have someone else involved in the process!

REWARD YOURSELF

When you’re out there trying to make some strides forward in whatever goal you're chasing, don’t forget to reward yourself along the way. Whether that’s by getting some new gear at a certain milestone (we heard it can improve performance immeasurably!) or just by going for a treat coffee in that café you’re fond of. Rewards will increase your motivation, make you feel good about how far you’ve come and dangle the carrot ahead of you for the next milestone. Never forget to treat yo’ self!

STAY PATIENT

Trust the process. A very cliché thing to say but it’s true. If you aren’t seeing the results or reaching the heights that you wish to be right away, don’t panic. It’s all about keeping a level head and staying patient. It’s also okay to alter some key milestones along the way if they were unrealistic in the first place. Don’t let setbacks throw you completely off course. Re-evaluate, focus on what you’ve achieved and target a closer milestone to give you a boost in the right direction.

Simple, right? When it comes down to it, you’re ultimately in charge of your own goals plan but you’re never alone. These are just some of the tips that have worked for us but everyone will have their own ideas on how to reach that sweet feeling of achievement. The hardest part is getting started and now, you’re all set to go!
